Every golfer has looked up a distance chart and felt one of two things: quiet satisfaction, or the sinking suspicion that the chart was written for somebody else.
Usually it was. Most published charts show a single set of “average” numbers with no indication of who that average describes. A 105 mph player and an 85 mph player do not belong in the same table, and the difference between them isn’t a few yards — it’s about 50 yards of driver carry and roughly a club and a half through the irons.
Here’s what the data actually shows, organized by the only variable that matters most: how fast you swing the driver.
Where these numbers come from
Two anchors from TrackMan, the launch monitor used on tour and in fitting bays worldwide: LPGA Tour players average about 94 mph of driver clubhead speed and carry the ball roughly 220 yards. PGA Tour players average about 113 mph and carry roughly 275.
Those two points establish the relationship between speed and carry — and importantly, they show it isn’t a straight line. Faster swings are more efficient, producing slightly more carry per mph, because higher speeds generate more favorable launch and spin conditions with the same strike.
For the rest of the bag, tour data alone would mislead you. Tour players hit down on their irons with more speed than amateurs, which changes the ratio between driver and iron distances. So the club-by-club numbers below are built from aggregated amateur shot-tracking data — millions of real shots recorded by Shot Scope and Arccos across every handicap level — then cross-checked against tour figures.

All numbers are carry distance in yards — how far the ball flies before it lands. Add roll for total distance (see the note below the chart).

Where most golfers land: the average male amateur swings the driver around 90–95 mph. If you’re carrying your driver 200–220 and your 7-iron 135–145, you are squarely normal.
Carry versus total
The chart above is carry only, and that’s deliberate. Carry is the number that decides whether you clear the bunker, the water, or the false front — the situations where being wrong is costly.
Roll varies enormously by club and conditions. On a flat, medium-firm fairway, a driver adds roughly 8% (a 209-yard carry rolls out to about 226 total), while a pitching wedge adds barely 1%. On a soft course after rain, roll nearly disappears. On a firm links in August, driver roll can double.
Use carry for club selection. Use total for bragging if you like.
Finding your swing speed without a launch monitor
You don’t need one. If you know roughly how far your solid drives carry — not total, and not your best-ever — you can work backward to your speed. A 200-yard carry implies about 87 mph; 240 yards implies about 101 mph.

Why your numbers will differ from any chart
Three reasons, all worth knowing:
Your lofts. Iron lofts are not standardized. A game-improvement 7-iron might be 28°, while a players’ iron of the same number is 34°. That’s more than a full club of difference with identical numbers stamped on the sole. Compare lofts before you compare distances with your playing partners.
Your strike. Every number in this chart assumes solid contact. Center-face contact versus a strike half an inch toward the toe can cost 10–15 yards with the same swing speed.
Your conditions. Temperature, altitude, humidity, and turf firmness all move the ball. Rules of thumb: about 2 yards per 10°F, and roughly 2% more carry per 1,000 feet of elevation.
The most useful thing you can do with this chart
Nothing, if you stop here. Charts are a starting point, not a complete answer.
The real gain comes from replacing estimates with your own measured carries — from a launch monitor session, a simulator round, or ten rounds of GPS shot tracking — and then building your bag around those numbers.
